pH-waarden na de geboorte

Als er tijdens het laatste stuk van de baring of direct bij de geboorte vermoeden is van asfyxie bij de baby, is snel diagnosticeren en behandelen cruciaal voor een zo goed mogelijke prognose. Bloedonderzoek aan de hand van de pH-waarden kan aantonen of er daadwerkelijk sprake is van asfyxie: de navelstrengbloedgasanalyse.

Sommige ziekenhuizen voeren een navelstrengbloedgasanalyse standaard uit zodra de baby is geboren, andere ziekenhuizen doen dit alleen bij bepaalde indicaties. Welke van deze twee opties (altijd of alleen op indicatie) de beste keuze is, is in Nederland geen consensus over.

Wat is asfyxie nu eigenlijk en wat houdt een navelstrengbloedgasanalyse precies in? Welke factoren zijn belangrijk voor een betrouwbare uitslag van deze test en hoe invasief is het testen van de pH-waarden voor de baby? Deze en meer vragen lichten we in dit artikel toe.
