Volg je eigen pad, neem de regie, ken je rechten en opties en maak weloverwogen beslissingen – voor veel zwangeren staan de maanden voor de bevalling in het teken van keuzes maken. Wel of geen prenatale diagnostiek? Echo’s? Vaccinaties? Waar ga ik bevallen, en met wie? Wat zijn de risico’s en hoe zwaar wegen ze voor mij? Welke interventies wil ik niet, of alleen onder bepaalde voorwaarden?
Zelf keuzes maken is direct verbonden met autonomie (de basisbehoefte om zelf te bepalen wat belangrijk voor je is) en het behoud van regie (de vaardigheid om autonomie in de praktijk te brengen door zelf weloverwogen beslissingen te nemen).
Het zijn ook deze twee factoren die beslissend zijn in het ontstaan én voorkomen van traumatische bevallingen (Stramrood 2011 en 2013). Toch is het de vraag of het echt kan, helemaal autonoom beslissingen nemen binnen een kort tijdsbestek en met de vaak grote emotionele kwetsbaarheid die met zwangerschap gepaard gaat; mensen zijn best complexe wezens en gevormd door een unieke mix van nature en nurture. Iemand die veilig gehecht is, emotioneel stabiel en met weinig krassen op de ziel, zal informatie anders verwerken en risico’s anders afwegen dan een door vroeg kindertrauma beschadigde zwangere met een angststoornis en dwingende schoonfamilie.

Betekent dit dat het idee van zelf keuzes maken een illusie is? Die vraag onderzoeken we in dit artikel. Tipje van de sluier (ook om het een beetje gezellig en positief te houden): uiteraard wordt ook dit geen zwartwit-verhaal. Mensen zijn met de juiste ondersteuning en eerlijke informatie wel degelijk in staat weloverwogen beslissingen te nemen, ook als de uitkomst ongewis is (zoals bij vrijwel alles rondom zwangerschap en bevallen het geval is). Het is ook de vraag of ‘de beste keuze’ (als die er al is) altijd gelijk staat aan de keuze met de ‘beste uitkomst’ (wat die dan ook is). Omdat onzekerheid inherent is aan keuzes maken, je weet immers nooit hoe het balletje voor jou gaat rollen, gaat het meer over de vraag wat zwangeren nodig hebben om zich gesteund en gedragen te voelen in het besluitvormingsproces.
